Church Bell Ropes from W R Outhwaite & Son, Ropemakers, can be seen in bell towers
around the world. They are made individually as described in Production from line quality flax yarns into three
strand ropes with all wool sallies. Rope lengths vary from 15 to 90 feet. We also supply
tolling ropes, leather muffles, and soft garter sleeves. Yorkshire tails and top end rope
waterproofing are available.
Sallies
Sallies may have one, two or three colours - bright red, white, blue, purple, green, gold,
green, black, wine red or a combination of these colours. Two colour sallies have one colour
which predominates in a ratio of 2:1. Sallies are trimmed to a standard 2" diameter.
However some towers may prefer a smaller diameter and this should be clearly indicated
when ordering. We will gladly supply samples of the yarn used in sallies for colour matching
Tails
Tail ends: These should be approx 1.5 x diam of wheel plus an
allowance for tuck-back (a minimum of 2’ for bells up to 15cwt and
at least 3’ for heavier bells), eg. for a 72” diameter wheel the tail end length is 1.5 x 72”
=108” + 24” = 132” or 11 feet. Standard tail lengths (10’6” for bells up to 15cwt and
11’6” for heavier bells) will be supplied unless otherwise
requested.
